| This is a fossil water beetle, Hydrophilus sp., preserved in oil-impregnated sands of a late Pleistocene (roughly 35, 000 years old) tar seep in the vicinity of the Kettleman Hills. The fossil came from a brea deposit similar to the world-famous Rancho La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, California. |
